An evening to be groggy at The Groghead

The GrogheadThe concept of a restaurant in a pub reinvigorated both pub culture and fine dining. Increasingly, the distinction between a restaurant and a pub is decreasing and in the crowd of watering holes, there are few that can sustain the look, feel and offerings. It is a challenge that every pub faces – to be a restaurant, a bar and a place to hang out and talk all rolled into one. One of the quirkiest additions to the gastro pubs in the capital, The Groghead promises to change how Delhiites spend a night about town.

The Groghead is a vibrant, attractive and friendly place which will appeal to people of all age groups who are looking for a top class dining, drinking and entertainment experience. Grog is an Australian slang for booze. The Groghead is a place for people who love their drinks. The interiors are a mix of rustic and modern, with a bar on the side and a stage at the end for live musical gigs. Spread over approx. 9000 sq. feet with a seating capacity of around 150 people, in a prime South Delhi location with an al-fresco area on top to boot, the restaurant features an innovative global menu.

The terrace is tastefully done with a dedicated live bar on one side and a live wood-fired pizza kitchen bang opposite it. When you surrender to the menu, you’ll take gluttony off the 7 Sins list. We started our evening with Vamp Diaries, a heady cocktail of Rose Wine, rose-infused vodka, apple juice, blended with red pepper, pink pepper corns, mint and maraschino cherries. What we were offered next is something we weren’t prepared for, but is certainly the pride of Groghead – a cocktail of rye whiskey, rosemary, orange vermouth, Blanco Vermouth and Applewood Smoke – served in a bulb – and aptly christened Tesla’s Legacy. Other quirky drinks on the menu (that I have made a mental note to check out next time) are like Naughty Babaji (Spiced rum, muddled mint, lemon chunks, honey, Babaji bitters, essence of bishop’s weed, Pakhandi ke goti), Two Gun Slingers (Cachaça, Tequila, thyme, fresh orange juice, jalapeño, sparkling water, celery salt & paprika rim), Paan-tini (Betel leaf infused vodka, TG bitters, peppermint rose rim ), Chlorophyllous Villain (Peach Schnapps, Baileys, Midori), BMW(Baileys, Malibu, Whisky), Bar-gasm (Baileys, Amaretto, Kahlua, whipped cream) and many more.

The eating started with Knock Out Shrimp shooters in the most amazing sauces and served in shot glasses. We moved onto a Medley of Honour – an absolute delight for vegetarians – that is a medley of grilled veggies and cottage cheese stacked on a bed of polenta cake, pesto balsamic reduction and served with chilly garlic toast. I was offered a very tempting looking Ballerina to wash it down – and though I wanted to refuse it politely, I was made to drink my words with a liberal dose of muddled orange, kaffir lime and orange juice with some vodka for good measure.

To pad our stomachs up, we dug into a Gin & Tonic Chicken (chargrilled whole chicken leg on skin marinated with Gin, Tonic, lemon juice, basil and other herbs) and Salmon Khan (Grilled Salmon Steak served on a bed of Vodka Injected Seared Watermelon. Do try their Dio Mio Pizza, one of the 14 varieties that their wood-fired oven tosses out. It is a rich indulgence of mix meats – pepperoni, chicken mortadella, chorizo, bacon and a generous garnish of mixed olives, capers, roasted garlic, jalapeño and pesto.

We were bursting at the seams by now but dived into decadence and their heavenly Apple Cider Cake. The Mojito On A Plate is another dessert that redefines its kind.

A tall beverage or a Martini in the crisp winter afternoon sunshine over a heavenly lunch at The Groghead will make an enduring impression and re-iterate why the place takes it’s ‘gastro-pub’ label very seriously.
