The Association of Surgeons of India celebrated the National Youth Day by announcing the beginning of Youth Wing of ASI, named as YUVA ASI in an enthusiastic manner. This has been started mainly to incorporate communication skills in the surgical training of the surgeons to overcome the growing problem of mistrust between Surgeons and the Society and to encourage the younger surgeons and to ensure a continuous transfer of surgical skills as well as the Association responsibilities, to the surgeons of tomorrow.
This was the first academic activity of the Association of Surgeons of India in 2016 started by Dr Suresh Vasistha who took over as the President ASI on December 20, 2015 at Gurgaon. Dr Vasistha, the President of the Association of Surgeons of India, also took the opportunity to dwell on his vision for 2016 and floated it for discussion among the members. It would be formally released on the Republic Day at Chennai.
The event was held at the Civil Service Officers’ Institute at Delhi by organising a symposium on “Bridging the Gap between the Surgeons &the Society”. Dr Isha Karwasra, senior registrar in Surgical Oncology presented young Surgeons perspective on this issue. Dr Sambit Patra, who is a Surgeon as well as a well-known socio-political personality delivered the keynote address on the subject. Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, a well-known advocate, gave her perspective on the subject. This was followed by a talk by Dr Suresh Vasistha, putting the point of view of the surgeons. He made a request to media persons for putting a positive image of the doctors. This was followed by Question Answer session. The function was attended by past President of ASI Dr B K Rau from Chennai, the senior most Surgeon of Delhi Dr Sandeep Mukherjee and Dr Madhushekar from Hyderabad, Dr Chintamani, Dr Subash Agarwal, Dr C K Durga and Dr K N Srivastava from Delhi were present. The event was attended by several young surgeons and residents of surgery from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and UP. Apart from this Ex-secretary of ASI Dr R K Karwasra from Rohtak and Governing Council Members of ASI Dr A S Rana, Dr Parvesh Nandal and Dr Chanjeev Singh were also present.
