Much like the cuddly animal it is named after, The Great Bear is a rather chilled out microbrewery to spend the lazy hazy crazy summer days. Part abandoned warehouse – with exposed brick walls covered in graffiti and piped ceilings – and part open space surrounded by lush greenery, it is as quirky as it is chic. The table tops are fitted over with plumbing pipes and vintage style sewing machine tops. The outdoors have a Zen-like tranquility where the chill and the plants set the mood for a perfect night out with friends and family.
In terms of food and drinks, there is something for everyone. The microbrewery produces its own Golden Ale, Weiss (wheat), German Bock, and a brewer’s special with each having a distinct taste of its own. Depending on the personal preference each has different levels of alcohol content – and consequently a different taste and texture. From in-house brews such as Pilsner, Green Apple Beer to Weiss (wheat) beer to indigenous beer cocktails such as Lagerita (Weiss beer with tequila, peach schnapps, and orange) and wines and mocktails – your glass will always be full.
The carnivores MUST try the Samke Harra – a grilled fillet of basa served with spinach couscous, sauteed vegetables and tomato coulis. Dig into gnocchi, pasta in carbonara sauce, poulet roti au jus, chicken veracruz, burgers, pizzas, Alleppey fish curry, and bhuna gosht are to name a few of the dishes. There is a whole range of vegetarian options like tacos, falafel, cheddar bites, spinach, and cheese fatayer – rather rare for a microbrewery that leaves the herbivores with very limited choice.
Don’t miss the ‘dessertiest’ dessert ever – a giant Choco Chip cookie that is the bed for the creamiest scoop of vanilla ice cream soaked in chocolate sauce!
