Whenever I hear “matte lipstick”, my lips begin to dry out – almost in an involuntary action. I am that much skeptical about ‘long wear’, ‘kiss proof’ and ‘matte’ lip colours. But I tried a particular shade from FACES Ultime Pro Velvet Matte Lipsticks collection and I am now hooked. It was the soft, almost pastel colour and dreamy pink colour of the shade ‘As You Like It’ that really seduced me. I bought it for a lark only for the colour. But now that I have been using it for more than a week, I have to confess that I am totally won over by their pigmentation and staying power, and most importantly, creamy and non-drying formula.
As You Like It is a very summery floral bright (and yet not blingy) pink colour with no shimmer and yet there is a creamy look and feel to it. It has orchid undertones to it and is still not too bright. A perfect vintage English rose colour – without the dullness. This can work as an every day, multi-occasion colour that seems to suit all skin tones. So you can wear it to work as well as to a fun do.
The texture of this lipstick is creamy matte. And this is why the FACES lipstick glides smoothly on the lips without any pulling or tugging. Most other matte lipsticks have an inherent dry texture – which is what makes them crack or your lips appear chapped after an hour or two. And you cannot touch up the lipsticks – and have to remove them completely and reapply. This is not the case with FACES. The gloss finish settles into a dreamy matter look without making your lips appear dry within five minutes. Neither drying the lips, nor settling in the creases, this is easily one of the most soft-feeling, feather-light and dewy lipsticks I have tried. Do exfoliate your lips though before applying. The lipstick feels light on the lips and despite being a matte lip colour, it doesn’t feel cakey even if you layer on a few extra swipes. The colour saturation and pigmentation is also very nice. An opaque and rich colour in just one swipe, though for evening you may want to use a second coat. Also, despite being a long-wear lipstick it does not stain the lips at all.
The best thing about this lipstick is its staying power, it stays put for at least 7-8 hours with very little fading. So it does walk its talk. The colour did fade from the centre of the lips after meals, but it can be touched up, without making it look cakey or untidy unlike other dry matte lipsticks. It has a faint vanilla smell to it, which isn’t overpowering and disappears within a few seconds after you have it on your lips.
I have seen the entire range and am rather impressed with the colour palette (12 shades in all) as well – from bright reds to subtle nudes – there is a colour to suit every occasion. This luxurious range of lipsticks with an unbeatable gliding quality and unique satin finish promises to give you the most luscious lips ever.
I am, clearly hooked to this one and am packing this as my holiday lipstick or even to add some colour to dull and grey monsoon days.
