With no offence, I could say that the Indian beer drinker has hitherto only held only synthetic flavours and glycerine-doused mugs in his hand. The trend of microbreweries is perhaps slowly trying to change that. But even then, there are only a few of them that can vouch for the best quality beer served.
Malt & Co., Chandigarh’s newest microbrewery and kitchen is all set to change the beer-drinking scene. Located within the Piccadilly Hotel premises, the modernistic and yet relaxed environs welcome with the sound of buzzing conversation (as opposed to noisy music of most pubs) and of course the sound of gurgling beer! One can watch the beer being made, and drink it too!
At The Malt & Co., there are six beers to choose from – including wheat, lager, green, dark and ginger – and you can choose for it to be served in a mug, tower or jug. Trust me, go with the wheat and any can or pint that you have been buying so far will make you want to head straight to the trash bin.
The exhaustive food menu ranges from Drunken Shrimps to Veg Mezze, Appam and Stew to Caramelized French Fries and Mobster Platters – a whole range of pub grub and wholesome mains. I chose Okra Chilli Fries – that were a quirky twist to the good old bhindi and the Pale Ale Chicken Brochettes, on a skewer, marinated in ale. The Crab Cakes are also something you MUST try. They are fresh as the morning catch with just the right amount of seasoning to let the natural flavours whet your appetite.
For dessert, I had a Chocolate Rum Loaf with Beer Sauce – my belly was full and yet I kept stuffing my mouth – it is that DECADENT.
The Malt & Co. is the best new watering hole to spend a whole day at in the company of friends and good beer.
