Vichy here and now

Vichy is a world famous spa city with hot mineral springs in France. But you need not travel as far to soak in the benefits. Its namesake product company has several products that are almost invincible. And I discovered my summer skincare arsenal quite by chance.

If I am suggesting not to travel to Vichy for a spa, it is because I discovered nourishing goodness for the skin in the Eau Thermale or the Thermal Spa Water (Rs 350 for 50ml). Thermal water is basically water sourced/collected from natural springs in France and it is believed to be full of minerals and anti oxidants, in short very beneficial for skin. Especially recommended for sensitive skin, Vichy Thermal Water is enriched with 15 rare minerals. These are Bicarbonates: 4776.3, Chloride: 357.0, Potassium: 99.6, Fluorine: 8.8, Sodium: 1860.0, Calcium: 150.6, Magnesium: 12.3, Iron: 1.0, Neutral pH. It has no preservatives, fragrances or parabens and comes in a spray bottle – which means your skin does not get any. I, now, use it this as a mini-moisturiser (when you don’t need something heavy in the hot summer and humid monsoon months) or as a toner and even face refresher during the day. All I do is cleanse my face thoroughly and spray it once. After spraying, leave it to dry naturally. You can put anything you like thereafter – sunscreen, makeup – whatever. During the day, it immediately soothes and refreshes. I actually use this to blend foundation as well – the foundation appears natural and dewy rather than cakey. Its multitasking property is not the only reason why I will definitely buy this again. This product shows serious results too – redness instantly gone, itchiness reduced and stretching resulting after using face also gone! It has also made my skin more supple over time and soothes sunburns or any other skin concern.

I must confess while I make do with what I get, I have yet not found the sunscreen for me. Until now, that is. I do believe the sun is the skin’s biggest enemy and I do want to use sunscreen daily. But it’s so hard to find one that works for moody skin – oily sometimes, dry otherwise, sensitive, prone to breakouts…whew! Vichy Ideal Soleil SPF 50 Dry Touch (Rs 1200 for 50ml) is the best sunscreen ever! At first, it was quite hard to blend to my skin because it dries fast – but that’s the beauty, it does not make your face look like it’s been dipped in oil – and also therefore keeps you looking matte. Shine is controlled, and so are breakouts. I flap it into my face. It has a matte finish and control my face shine free for whole day. I don’t break out either. The product has an absorbing texture, and its UV filter, UV filter Mexoryl XL is a patented ingredient. Indeed this sun protection weapon does guard against sun damage, blemishes, brown patches and pigmentation, as well as sun-induced premature skin ageing and excess sebum production. Apply it about ten minutes before you step out in the sun and like me, you will be recommending it everywhere.

A serum is the latest addition to the cleansing-toning-moisturising routine. And once you are on the wrong side of 30, it becomes even more imperative to start using serums to postpone the effects of ageing as well as give your skin nourishment to heal it from within. In this case, I laid my hands on the Vichy Liftactive Serum 10 (Rs 2750 for 30ml) – a self proclaimed ‘youth enhancing’ serum. This serum is suitable for all skin types, but most importantly, being gel-based, it is like a manna from heaven for summers when one cannot use oil-based serums. This works as an excellent base for my sunscreen and makeup without being sticky. Before applying, I had thought this serum would be very heavy for the skin and oily as well, but this one is exactly opposite of my expectation. This gets absorbed like a gel leaving behind beautiful and healthy skin and is a great night cream too.

This anti-aging treatment has been formulated with Rhamnose. This ingredient, a naturally derived plant sugar, has been proven to be effective in skin rejuvenation. Vichy Liftactive Serum 10 is a light serum, but this does not take away from its moisturizing property. I found it to be effective on wrinkles, pores and sagging. My skin also appeared more radiant and glowy just after three days of consistent use. I applied a drop on cleansed skin twice a day. Within 15 minutes of applying, my skin felt firmer, suppler, smoother and the pores also seemed smaller. So there was an overall ‘lifting’ effect. After a month of regular use, the LiftActiv Serum 10 shows dramatic improvement on facial wrinkles.

I think this justifies its price tag. As far as results are concerned, it has surely given a new life to my skin. I have been in love with this serum and despite the cost; I will certainly buy it again.
